Square One Older Adult Centre launches Marketing Campaign

Thanks to $137,700 OTF Grant

Mississauga – On Wednesday, October 17 the Square One Older Adult Centre celebrated the launch of a new marketing campaign thanks to a $137,700 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Peter Fonseca, MPP for Mississauga-Streetsville, joined OTF representative Claire Parent-McCullough for the announcement.

“With the seniors community growing extensively over the next decade, the Square One Older Adult Centre has been and will continue to be an important organization in our community, “ said MPP Fonseca. “This is an organization which works to meet the social and recreational needs of seniors. I am proud to have this organization involved heavily in the lives of our community members and I congratulate them on their accomplishment.”

Over the next two years, the OTF grant will help with outreach and marketing activities that will increase the participation of Mississauga’s older adult community in the Centre’s activities. In addition, the marketing campaign will help generate increased support for the Centre’s expanding operation.

“We have 130 active volunteers who contribute 28,000 volunteer hours per year,” said Shirley Corbett, President of the Square One Older Adult Centre. “We plan on using this generous grant to place appropriate exterior signage, conduct focus groups and surveys to enhance our current programs, expand our ethno cultural diversity and to build new partnerships our community. We will also create a new major fundraising event that will be held annually.”

The Square One Older Adult Centre opened in 1992 after considerable efforts by Mississauga Recreation and Parks, the Mississauga Central Lions Club, Square One Shopping Centre and a dedicated team of older adult volunteer leaders. Start up funding came from the City of Mississauga, New Horizons (a federal grant program to purchase equipment), the Mississauga Central Lions Club, and the Ministry of Health (EPC funding). The project was intended to develop a recreation centre “to be operated by and for older adults” ages 55+ years of age (in 2005 the membership policy was changed to lower the required age to 50 years of age). Over the past 15 years the Older Adult Centre has been graciously supported by a variety of organizations and individuals. There are over 1,400 members and approximately 60 weekly programs offered, including close to 100 annual

special event and trips, many small and large fundraisers. For more information, please contact Marking and Community Development Coordinator Lina Zita at 905-615-3207.
